Words of a drunken Frenchman

Today for Caleb’s and mine new and exciting adventure during Grand Finale Week we learned some phrases in Portuguese. Hubby, Caleb and I plan on one day traveling to Brazil where the language will be necessary for our survival.
I already speak a lot of Spanish to my little boy but today required something a little more daring, thus we turned to Portuguese, a language that has both its beauty and the tendency to resemble “a drunken Frenchman trying to speak Spanish,” to borrow a phrase from the Lonely Planet phrasebook I am using.
After our mid-morning feeding, Caleb and I sat down and talked to each other in Portuguese for a good 15 minutes. We learned how to say How old are you? (Quantos anos tem?) and I’m not interested in drugs (A droga nao me atria). We also learned how to say Help! A mouse! (Socorro! Um rato!) and What a cute puppy! (Que cachorro tao querido!). But by far my favorite phrase and the one that will be most useful for when Caleb one day needs to break up with his Brazilian girlfriend is Let’s just be friends, OK? (Ficamos amigos, esta bem?).
